Free online tutoring for students

Every student deserves someone in their corner.

Ahlen matches students from elementary school to Grade 12 with volunteer tutors who know the subject, fit your schedule, and — whenever we can — speak your language at home.

  • Always free
  • Elementary to Grade 12
  • Tutors who speak your language

How it works

Three simple steps.

1

Tell us about your student

A short form: grade, subjects, the days that work, the languages you speak at home. Five minutes, tops.

2

We find the right tutor

Our team reads every form and pairs your child with a volunteer who fits — subject, schedule, personality.

3

Sessions start — and keep going

Weekly one-on-one sessions over video call. Same tutor each week, so trust has time to grow.

New to Canada

Extra help settling into a new school system, new vocabulary, and new expectations — from tutors who've often done it themselves.

Homework & study skills

Organization, test prep, and how to actually study. The quiet skills that make every other subject easier.

Something else?

Coding, French immersion, university applications — ask. If we have a volunteer who can help, we'll match you.

Our story

It started as a neighbourhood thing.

Ahlen began as a grassroots community project: a handful of students helping younger students with homework, because someone had once done the same for them. Word got around. Parents asked if we could take one more. Then one more.

Today we're a network of volunteer tutors, built on one stubborn belief: education is a right, not a privilege. Talented students shouldn't miss out because of a postal code or a price tag.

The name is Arabic. Ahlanأهلاً — is what you say when someone comes to your door. It means: you're family here. Make yourself at home.

Every child deserves a place where it's safe to ask the “dumb” question — because that's where learning actually starts.

What we stand for

  • Inclusivity

Every background, every ability level, every language. If you're asking for help, you belong here.

  • Empowerment

We don't do homework for students. We help them become the kind of student who doesn't need us.

  • Community

Tutors were once students. Students become tutors. That's the whole plan.

The people

Tutors are neighbours, not strangers.

Our volunteers are university students, teachers, engineers, nurses, retirees — people who live around the corner and remember what grade 9 felt like. Many grew up speaking Arabic, Urdu, French, or Spanish at home, which means your child can learn in whichever language clicks.

Questions we get a lot.

Didn't find yours? Email team@ahlen.ca.

Is it really free?

Yes. No registration fee, no “first session free”, no materials cost. Ahlen is run entirely by volunteers.

Who are the tutors?

Volunteers from our community — mostly university students and working professionals. Every volunteer is interviewed by our team before they're matched with a child.

Is it online or in person?

Online. All sessions happen over video call, so your student just needs a device with a camera and an internet connection — no travelling needed.

My English isn't great. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Fill in the form in whatever language you like — we'll read it. Many of our tutors and team members speak Arabic, Urdu, French, and Spanish.

What ages do you take?

Elementary school through Grade 12. If your child is a little outside that range, ask anyway.

How long until we're matched?

It depends on the subject and your schedule. We'll email you within a few days to say where things stand — you won't be left wondering.
